NOVICE FOOTBALL COACH'S PLAYBOOK

Mosquito Tackle,  Squirt Flag, Mite Flag and Girls Flag

This playbook contains eighteen sample plays that can be used by young football players.

Plays 13, 14 and 18 are not recommended for flag football because they involve going up the middle where the likelihood of success will be low.

It is suggested that the coaches begin with sample plays such as 1, 3, 6, 7, 12 ,13, 14, 15 ,17.  The other plays require a bit more skill and can be added once the players master the initial basic plays.

Offence

C – Centre – snaps the ball, blocks

G - Guard – one on either side of centre, act as blockers

C and G are not permitted to catch passes in Mosquito.  They can catch passes in Squirt.

E – End – on either side of G.  Can be “tight” – close to G or “wide”; far away from G

SB – Slotback stands two yards back from line of scrimmage. Can be anywhere on the field.

QB – Quarterback.  Takes the ball from centre.  Starts the play. Handles the ball on every play.

RB – Running Back.  Carries the ball.  Can catch passes.

Note:  In Mosquito, QB , RB positions are for players who weigh 110 lbs. or less (5 pound cushion allowed).  No weight limit on receivers.

 Defence

DT – Defensive Tackle.  Plays the run.  Especially up the middle.

DE – Defensive End.  Plays the run especially the outside.

MLB – Middle Linebacker. Plays the run first but also must cover pass receivers on short pass routes in the middle area.

OLB – Outside Linebacker.  Plays outside runs first but also must cover receivers on short pass routes outside.

CB – Cornerback.  On sweep run plays this player must make sure that the ball carrier does not get outside and around the end.  They are also responsible for covering the outside pass receiver.

FS – Free Safety.  This player must cover deep passes up the middle.  They are the last resort to stop a touchdown saving tackle.

NG – Nose Guard.  In the 3-3-4 defensive alignment the two DT positions are replaced by one NG.  This position has the same responsibilities as DT.

DHB – Defensive Halfback.  In the 3-3-4 defensive alignment the FS position is replaced by two DHB.  Their responsibilities are the same as the FS position.

This probably should be your starting Mosquito defensive alignment.  This is a good setup for stopping the run.

  4 – 3 – 3  means: 4 defensive linemen, 3 linebackers and 3 defensive backs.

This alignment sacrifices a bit of run stopping power in order to better defend the pass.  An extra defensive back is added while on defensive lineman is removed.  We suggest that squirt teams use a 3 – 3 – 4.

This defence is good against a team that throws a lot of passes.  It may also be wise to switch to this alignment when it is likely the opposition is going to pass.  Example: on third down when a lot of yardage is needed to get a first down.  When we are playing 4 down football, one of the first three downs must be a pass.  If a team runs two running plays on 1st and 2nd down the 3rd must be a pass.
